According to the official website, Golden Frog has been fighting for more than 20 years for the opening of the internet and the protection of users’ privacy. The company was founded in 1994 by parents Ron and Carolyn Jokubaitis in response to an incident in the United States, where the NSA followed the AT&T network. VyprVPN is a VPN provider for Golden Frog, based in Switzerland.

It offers its users more than 700 servers in 70 different locations. ExpressVPN and NordVPN’s main competitors have servers in 90 countries, but VyprVPN is working to increase the number of servers.

VyprVPN is the only VPN provider that registers its own servers and DNS. For users, who don’t know what this means – they own the entire network and only they have access to your personal information. VyprVPN is compatible with many operating systems and devices, such as Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, routers and smart TVs.

Key Features of VyprVPN

VyprVPN positions itself as the fastest VPN service in the world. In addition to a high-speed connection, Vypr has a large number of features. Premium users have access to technologies such as Chameleon and VyprDNS, which other VPN providers do not have.

It has more than 700 servers in 70 locations worldwide with more than 200,000 IP addresses. Another interesting feature of VyprVPN is that it supports up to 5 devices at the same time. So you don’t have to worry about your family and friends, just share the VPN with them.

Server Network

When looking at VPN server networks, we always stress the importance of a wide distribution of servers. For example, the top-rated VPN providers have between 3,000 and 5,000 servers worldwide, providing secure Internet access to millions of users. We need to reiterate that VPNs that have a large network of servers offer a better service than those that do not. The importance is generally perceived in the way they bypass geoblocked sites.

You see, a VPN server located in a certain location is more likely to do an excellent job of unblocking firewalls at a geoffensive site than a server that is miles away from the company’s geographic location. In addition, when there are more servers, the congestion on each server will decrease significantly as fewer people will use each server. Having a congestion-free VPN server means that the speed will be superb, allowing users to get on with their lives.

Following this rule of thumb, VyprVPN has deployed over 700 servers in 70 locations worldwide. While the number of servers is less than what high-end VPN providers typically have in the cybersecurity industry, it is truly commendable. In terms of the server network, VyprVPN servers are hosted in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania.

With over 200,000 IP addresses in its pool, users will certainly be able to enjoy the Internet without having to look over their shoulders. It will interest you to know that VyprVPN does not allow other VPN providers to host and manage its servers, which is one of the ways the team builds trust among its many customers around the world.

It also has dynamic server switching capabilities, which virtually reduces server overloads. An overview of its server network in North America shows that the United States has eight servers, while Canada and Mexico each share one. With 27 servers, Europe has the largest number of servers per continent.

Surprisingly, each country within its European jurisdiction has only one server. Furthermore, the distribution statistics of the remaining servers can be represented simply in this way: Asia (14), Middle East (5), South America (4), Oceania (5) and Africa (2).

Security & Privacy

It is undeniable that the vast majority of VPN users subscribe to it because they want to access the Internet privately, securely and anonymously. This undoubtedly shows the importance of security for every VPN user. In this sense, let’s discover the features that VyprVPN has put in place to meet these requirements.

  • Kill Switch

In case you didn’t know it, a Kill Switch is a security feature that is offered by default in most high-end VPN services. In VyprVPN, it performs the same function as in other VPNs, blocking data flow whenever the VPN is disconnected or there is a network outage. If a Kill Switch is embedded in a network, it means that you can suspend its traffic when the VPN starts having technical problems.

Although most VPNs promise 100% uptime, it is rare that they do not encounter a technical problem from time to time. Therefore, the VyprVPN Kill Switch protects your IP address and data when the encrypted network starts working. This feature is only available for Windows, Mac and Android applications.

  • Split tunneling

VyprVPN currently offers “split tunneling”. If you look at what this means, split tunneling allows users to route a certain amount of traffic through an ISP and then through a VPN. In doing so, it greatly improves the speed of your network. You will appreciate this VPN if you have network hungry applications that you prefer to route only through the VPN tunnel.

In addition to improving your speed, the shared tunnel also increases your security, because you can decide what the ISP sees and what they don’t see. This is one of the measures VyprVPN uses to improve subscriber privacy on its network.

  • Encryption protocols

By implementing the required encryption standard, VyprVPN takes a major step forward in protecting your privacy and anonymity. The most commonly used VPN encryption standard in the industry today is 256-bit AES encryption. Also known as military-grade encryption, 256-bit AES ensures that your data is masked so that no one can intercept and crack its contents.

This Swiss-based VPN has this and is used for control channel purposes with RSA encryption (TLS-ECDHE-RSA-2048) and SHA384 HMAC authentication. In addition, the Diffie-Hellman-2048 key exchange ensures complete upstream confidentiality (PFS).

For data exchange, AES-256 encryption works with HMAC SHA256 hash authentication – and the TLS-ECDHE-RSA-2048 takes care of the handshake on the data channel. All of these encryption options are available for users who opt for OpenVPN.

Furthering the VPN protocols that VyprVPN implements, premium users can also choose from L2TP, PPTP and Chameleon protocol. These protocols essentially allow your smart device to communicate effectively with VyprVPN via a secure channel. OpenVPN is by far the most popular VPN protocol in the industry.

  • Leak protection

If you want to use a VPN that guarantees your privacy and security, you need to test its leakage protection. There are two main leak tests we have performed in this regard: DNS and IPv6 leak tests. DNS leak protection ensures that your IP address and supposedly encrypted data is not exposed to people who are not supposed to see it. If a VPN suffers a DNS leak, it is a major security flaw, which is capable of exposing everything a VPN provider tries to protect (mainly the IP address and user data).

On the other hand, when there is IPv6 leak protection, it means that the service provider has a system that automatically disables IPv6 traffic while the VPN connection is still active. This means that your IPv6 traffic is not disclosed to prying eyes. Well, we tested the VyprVPN to see if it offers both critical leak protections.

By performing DNS leak protection, this VPN came out triumphant! This is definitely good news! Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the IPv6 leak protection, as the VPN did not pass the test. But, in fairness to VyprVPN, it did not promise IPv6 leak protection. However, you should be aware that your IPv6 traffic is leaked if you subscribe to this service.

  • Wi-Fi protection

Here’s another feature that allows you to protect yourself every time you access the Internet using VyprVPN. You see, in a typical bistro, school, airport or hotel, your smartphone will detect free Wi-Fi. In this case, Wi-Fi is known as an unreliable network. Since it is a public Wi-Fi, anyone can connect to it, including criminally inclined hackers. Yes, that’s what the name is all about.

The truth is, when you share such a Wi-Fi hotspot with cybercriminals, you are practically putting yourself at risk. That’s simply because cybercriminals usually hang around looking for unsuspecting Internet users to steal from. With their sophisticated phishing tools, they steal connection settings, causing incalculable damage to people’s smart devices.

Fortunately, VyprVPN has automatic Wi-Fi protection for its desktop and mobile applications. Using the NAT firewall, unsolicited requests and data packets are blocked. While this feature has its limitations, it is one of the measures VyprVPN takes to ensure your security when connecting to an unsecured network.

  • Other security features

VyprVPN has some great security features that will definitely keep you one step ahead of the wiretaps. Unfortunately, there are other crucial features that VyprVPN does not currently offer. For example, it doesn’t have an ad blocker. The ad blocker helps the VPN user to block malicious websites, malware, spyware and advertisements.

In addition, VyprVPN is not compatible with TOR (The Onion Router). While both TOR and VyprVPN tend to improve security and privacy, they work differently. The fact is that VPN developers have succeeded in developing a mechanism that allows users to connect the two highly encrypted networks, thus enhancing their security. In short, the TOR over VPN service is now easily available in many high-end VPNs.

Logging Policy

Each VPN has a privacy or logging policy. Basically, a logging policy is a feature of the VPN that specifies what the provider typically does with its subscriber data. If you are just starting to use a VPN, it should matter to you what these companies do with your data, as their illegal activities may compromise your security.

Have you ever taken the time to imagine what happens to your data if a VPN provider sells it to a third party company? Strangely enough, they do. Yes, it is a common practice among those who provide services completely free of charge. The reason is that these companies have overhead costs to pay.

Yes, they need funds to manage their day-to-day operations, launch new projects and maintain existing IT infrastructure. Our findings show that they often collect data such as your name, e-mail address, physical addresses, payment information, IP addresses, etc., which is then used to determine whether or not you are eligible to receive the service.

Again, this is common among service providers who offer feedback services. While many of them admit that they collect personal information about users, many others clearly violate users’ trust by lying about not collecting their data.

In addition to examining what VPN companies do with your data, you should also investigate the location of a VPN provider before subscribing to their service. This is simply due to the fact that some jurisdictions are not favorable to the location of such companies. You see, there is an association known as the 5/9/14-Eyes Alliances.

Essentially, the member countries collect files on Internet users and share them among themselves. This means that if a member country is able to get its hands on your personal information, it will be shared among its members around the world. Simply put, you can live in the United States and security guards in the United Kingdom will have all your personal information.

But what is VyprVPN’s role in all this? Well, you have absolutely nothing to worry about, because this VPN has made it clear that it doesn’t keep your logs. It doesn’t stop there, because VyprVPN publicly monitors its activities.

In fact, it is the first VPN company in the world to publicly audit its operations in order to gain the trust of its many subscribers around the world. However, Gold Frog, the developer of VyprVPN, revealed in 2018 that it collects certain information from its users in order to improve their experience. The cybersecurity company reported that it was logging on :

  • Customer’s source IP address (IP address from your ISP)
  • The IP address VyprVPN assigns to its users
  • Log start and end times
  • Total amount of data used.

Without a doubt, all this information helps the company to improve its user experience. However, the company ended the era of logging that same year because it felt the team had gained enough experience. With this in-depth industry knowledge, they no longer need to collect personal information from users.

Furthermore, VyprVPN is based in Switzerland – a country that is not a member of the intelligence sharing alliances. Finally, it was never mentioned anywhere that VyprVPN shares subscriber contact information with security agencies. Bad press ruins VPN companies. From the above, this VPN has our seal of approval on the zero-block policy.

VyprVPNs Speed

Server LocationDownload SpeedUpload Speed
New York51 Mbps3.17 Mbps
Amsterdam74 Mbps35 Mbps
London70 Mbps37 Mbps
Hong Kong54 Mbps8.22 Mbps

One of the crucial factors to consider in your ideal VPN is its speed. That’s simply because you need speed to do everything online. From streaming to chatting, uploading to downloading, audio to video calls, all of these activities require speed to get the most out of them. That’s why we performed a speed test on VyprVPN using 4 different server locations. We’ve compiled our results, but we’re going to explain them anyway.

We started this test with the New York server. After performing the speed tests, we recorded a download speed of 51 Mbps and an upload speed of 3.17 Mbps. It should be noted that while the download speed is good, the upload speed leaves something to be desired. But most Internet users download more than they download.

Later on, things got a bit faster when we switched to the server in Amsterdam. Our download speed was 74 Mbps while the upload speed was 35 Mbps. Without trying to find out more, these results represent a significant improvement over what we got on the server in New York. Furthermore, it shows that you are more likely to enjoy VyprVPN when you connect to its Amsterdam server – thanks to its impressive speed.

On the London server, the speed remained excellent, but not without a few drops. As the table shows, the download speed was 70 Mbps while the upload speed was 37 Mbps. Both download and upload speeds showed a slight bit drop. Despite these decreases, the disparity between the upload and download speeds in Amsterdam and London remains largely insignificant. Invariably, this clearly shows that VyprVPN is cool for anyone looking to use its European servers to access the Internet at all times.

Our test would remain incomplete without a visit to the Hong Kong server. Of course, this is a tradition, so speeds have dropped as expected. To put it plainly, the results showed a download speed of 54 Mbps and an upload speed of 8.22 Mbps. It is clear from these results that while the download speed lost a few bits, the upload speed dropped sharply. In truth, these results are commendable.

  • Speed Summary

Now, how do we conclude our conclusions? Well, here’s how: VyprVPN’s speed is superb, both upstream and downstream. Indeed, our results indicate that the average download speed of the two servers we tested remained stable at 62.25 Mbps while the average upload speed was 20.85 Mbps. These results are excellent in every respect, as one would expect these ultra-fast speeds to come only from the top-rated VPNs. We can now deduce that all the server locations we tested have good speeds.

Outside of our current test, you may notice a drop in your network speed every time you connect to VyprVPN. Of course, this is not unique to this VPN as it happens with other services as well. But then, you should be very worried when the speed drops to an abysmal level. You can use the appropriate web tools to perform the speed tests yourself. On the other hand, what makes a good VPN is that the disparity between the speed before and after the connection is negligible.

It should be noted that during the speed test, the latency remained low. Nevertheless, its connection speed is surprisingly resilient. In addition, certain factors influence the speed of the server. These factors include your network connection, your location, and the processing speed of your computer. So you should always keep this in mind. In conclusion, VyprVPN has great speed and deserves our congratulations.

Customer Service

Customer Service

24-hour supportYes
Type of supportLive Chat
Free trial periodNo
Money-back guarantee30-day

We always advise potential users to ensure that their ideal VPN has effective customer service. No matter how you look at it, you can’t stress the importance of a good customer service team. That’s because they provide individual answers to mind-boggling questions. What’s more, some VPN teams even offer remote services, making life easier for their subscribers.

Since this is very important for the VPN, every good VPN has efficient customer service. While most of them claim to have effective customer service agents, they can be thrifty with the truth. But there is a yardstick for an efficient network. Here’s a list of them:

  • Multiple communication channels (email, live chat, contact form, social media, etc.)
  •  Working 24/7
  • Quick response to messages (questions and complaints).

The only way to know if VyprVPN meets all its requirements is to test the team. According to its website, it offers 24-hour support, which means you can contact the helpdesk at any time and get an answer in no time. It’s great, isn’t it? As a Swiss-based VPN provider, we deliberately contacted her live chat at 20:52 local time.

Some 5 minutes later we received a reply to the message. Yes, that’s a plus! During the conversation, we inquired about his free trial period. His agent replied: “VyprVPN does not offer a free trial period”. For other VPN providers who do offer this service, it allows users to evaluate the service and then decide whether or not to place an order when the period expires.

As the conversation progressed, we learned more about the VPN company’s offer. This time we asked the helpdesk how long their money-back guarantee policy would last. The representative responded instantly, saying that refunds are honored within 30 days.

This probably suggests that VyprVPN is compensating for its inability to offer a trial period. While some NPVs commit to repayment within a week, arguably VyprVPN’s month is that long. In any case, it is better to have such provisions in place than to have nothing in place.

As for other customer service functions, you can also contact the team and ask them to answer your questions by email. If you are not a fan of sending e-mails because answers may take a little longer, you can use the contact form. You can also visit their FAQ page, affectionately called Golden Frog Support. The questions are categorized, and you can simply click on the questions to get pre-prepared answers.

Since this VPN responds quickly to chats, we recommend that you always contact the team through this channel. It is also commendable that the agent we chatted with never redirected us to his FAQ page at any time to see the answers to some of the simple questions we asked him. This is a common practice among so-called “customer-centric” VPNs.

Like other VPN vendors, VyprVPN supports many operating systems. This makes perfect sense because a number of potential subscribers use devices with different operating systems. We will therefore dissect them one by one in this segment.

  • Windows

One of the operating systems that VyprVPN supports is Windows. This is no surprise because it is the most widely used operating system in the world. The client for Windows has a circuit breaker and automatic Wi-Fi protection, as we explained earlier. It also has excellent speed and is equipped with a good georeferencing site unlocking capability.

We have noticed that users do not suffer from DNS leakage. Well, this feature-rich client also has DNS settings, protocol selection, OpenVPN, automatic reconnection and automatic troubleshooting. Version 3.0 is available for download on your Windows operating system.

  • Ubuntu

If you use Ubuntu, you have absolutely nothing to worry about because the VyprVPN CLI for Linux allows you to enjoy everything Windows users appreciate. Getting started is quick and easy, as all you need to do is go to the VyprVPN website and follow the step-by-step instructions. It works well with Ubuntu. You can essentially use it if your system is running Ubuntu 14.0.04, 14.10, 15.0.04 and 16.0.04.

Outside of Ubuntu, you can try it on Linux Mint. If your system uses a GUI, you can go there. However, you may not be able to use it at the moment if you have a Debian-based distribution. But chances are it will work on distributions in no time. There are packages for 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. If you are not a technician, you may not be able to configure and use it easily.

  • macOS

The VyprVPN 3.0 Mac VPN OS X client comes with many great features. This is one of the steps taken by the VyprVPN team to introduce the macOS family. It has DNS leakage protection and a shutdown switch. Yes, you don’t have to worry about these critical security features because we tested them and they worked well. As a proud macOS user, you’ll also enjoy many VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, L2TP and the Chameleon protocol.

To get started, you will need to download and install the software. Other services you can access include high-speed servers, server selection, automatic reconnection, DNS configuration, automatic troubleshooting and a host of other features.

  • Android

For mobile devices, VyprVPN brings amazing features to all tablet and smartphone users. Version 3.0 of VyprVPN is available on Android, allowing you to secure your mobile devices when accessing the Internet on the go. To get started, you need to visit the Google Play Store from any Android device.

It’s quick and easy to set up. Upon installation, you’ll have access to public Wi-Fi protection, automatic reconnection, server selection, fast servers, and IKEv2. While OpenVPN is more popular in the industry, the VyprVPN Android client works with IKEv2. You’ll also appreciate the kill switch, Chameleon protocol, and automatic port selection.

  • iOS

The iDevice family is not to be outdone since there is a client for them. Just like the other clients we’ve discussed here, the VyprVPN version works on iPads and iPhones. This means that if you use one of these devices, you can download and start enjoying the exciting features that VyprVPN has in store for you.

But in this case, your device must be running on iOS 8 and higher. Plus, you get many benefits, including 24/7 customer service, tamper-proof security and unlimited bandwidth. And you’ll benefit from the IKEv2 protocol, VyprDNS and third-party DNS.

  • Router

Finally, you can secure your router by configuring the smart device using VyprVPN. In fact, it supports a wide range of routers and you can connect a number of devices that are not VPN compatible. However, you will need to manually configure the VPN using its three-step installation guidelines. Just before you do so, you need to find out if this VPN is compatible with the router in question.

Some of the most popular routers that VyprVPN works with include DD-WRT, Tomato, Asus, and OpenWRT. The support team is always ready to help you if you have trouble setting it up on your end. From your router, you can connect Chromecast, Xbox, Roku, PlayStation, Nintendo and other game consoles. Don’t forget that there is also a VyprVPN application for smart TV, such as Android TV and Apple TV.

Browser Extensions

Unfortunately VyprVPN doesn’t any browser extentions, it’s really pity.

Torrenting with VyprVPN

You may not have known it, torrent means the downloading of peer-to-peer files via the BitTorrent protocol. Over the years, this method of file sharing has become controversial as many users take advantage of its security and large file support to download pirated material.

In some cases, these trolls download and share files (such as music, movies, TV series, software and other materials) without the consent of their rightful owners. As a result, some VPN providers that support the torrent do not openly promote the P2P file sharing method. One such vendor is VyprVPN.

It claims not to monitor what users are doing online, so it cannot be said to support illegal P2P file sharing. However, it does have a way to lock users’ accounts if their DMCA addresses are reported to be involved in illegal downloads. This is one of the ways VyprVPN frowns on intellectual property theft.

Because trolls share copyrighted material, it can be heavily sanctioned in some countries. This is because the producers of creative works of art usually work with the relevant government authorities to find infringers. In the U.S., you will receive several warning emails before legal action is taken against you. Just before entering the torrent, you should find out where your local torrent laws stand. Conversely, there are countries where the torrent is treated with kid gloves.

Netflix Access with VyprVPN

If you like to watch blockbusters, you probably know Netflix. From region to region, the American streaming giant entertains people in different places. Do you have Netflix that allows you to stream your local movies to your smart devices? If so, you’ll be interested to know that American Netflix remains the largest in the world because it offers movies and TV series more than any other.

Unfortunately, you can’t access its catalog if you’re not based in the United States. Curiously, Americans who have left their country can’t watch its movies and TV programs either. That’s because Netflix offers on-demand and geoblocked streaming services. But there is a solution.

Of course, you can use VyprVPN to bypass its firewall and access the U.S. catalog. That’s where superb speed comes in. Remember that we did a speed test on this VPN, and the results showed that it has amazing speed. So when you watch this streaming service using VyprVPN, you can be sure that you’re watching a high definition movie that’s free of buffering.

Keep in mind that Netflix is constantly looking for subscribers who access its site using VPNs. When these people are spotted, the streaming giant blocks access to its site to their IP addresses. On this basis, it is important that a VPN provider has a large number of IP addresses. With more than 200,000 IP addresses in its pool, there is no denying that VyprVPN is up to the task.

VyprVPN Cons

Here are some of VyprVPN shortcomings:

  • Missing security features

In order for each VPN provider to have a competitive advantage over others, they must have all the features that their competitors have and more. While VyprVPN seems to have done its homework, we must point out that compatibility with TORs and ad blockers are missing. These security features are essential when it comes to the VPN. You know, ad blockers prevent hackers from using ads, websites, spyware and malware to compromise computer security or user files.

  • Leaks WebRTC/IPv6 Traffic

In our leak protection tests, we found that both WebRTC and IPv6 traffic were leaking. Because VyprVPN does not do enough to protect against these leaks, sensitive information can be lost to the public. This is undoubtedly one of the flaws that this Swiss VPN provider needs to correct.

  • No free trial period

Yes, this is a disadvantage because most VPNs that trust the service they offer allow potential users to take advantage of the service after some time to evaluate it. At the end of the free trial period, it is expected that some of them will be encouraged to subscribe to the service.

  • Bitcoin not accepted

One of the ways that VPN companies improve user security is by using cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) for payment. The reason for this is that payments made with Bitcoin are untraceable and anonymous. Unfortunately, VyprVPN does not accept Bitcoins.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we must point out that VyprVPN has some of the best features that can be found in VPNs. In short, using this VPN will be very beneficial to you. Some of its benefits include good security features (with the exception of a few), Netflix unlocking, a fully implemented no-connect policy, dynamic customer service, torrent support, fairly good server distribution, cross-platform support, excellent speed, and the list goes on. On the other hand, one has to admit that its drawbacks are not really important. Without a doubt, it offers most of the most sought-after services you can possibly ask for in your ideal VPN.

Now let’s move on to the tough question: Do we recommend this VPN? The answer is YES! Of course, we have no reason not to endorse the VyprVPN because the team has put a lot into it. More importantly, the price is very competitive because VyprVPN guarantees users immeasurable value for their money.

Keep in mind that Netflix is always looking for people using VPNs to access its paid services, which means there is no guarantee that VyprVPN cannot be blocked in the future. But the good thing is that it has many US servers that can bypass the streaming site. So go ahead and order VyprVPN now! Then you can tell us about your experience.
